A stricken Panamanian-registered freighter with 24 crew members aboard was taking on water through a broken hatch in high seas about 1,200 miles east of the Maryland shore, maritime officials said. No injuries were reported among the crew members aboard the Skipper One, which was headed from Boston to Turkey carrying scrap iron when it was struck by high seas, a Canadian coast guard spokesman said. Spokesman Clarence Peddle said the Hudson, an oceanography vessel from Nova Scotia, was helping to evacuate the crew of the stricken vessel.
