Secord to Testify First on Iran
Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Richard V. Secord, a pivotal figure with key financial information, will be the first witness as Congress opens public hearings next week on the Iran- contra affair, legislators said Wednesday.
“There are few witnesses on our list who will be able to present to the nation the complete picture of what happened from the earliest days to this moment. Gen. Secord is one of them,” said Sen. Daniel K. Inouye (D-Hawaii).
Secord reportedly will testify voluntarily without the grant of limited immunity from prosecution that has been given to some other prospective witnesses. Inouye said he expects Secord to testify all of next week.
Robert C. McFarlane, President Reagan’s former national security adviser, will follow Secord to the witness table, Inouye said. It is anticipated that testimony by McFarlane, who has testified to other panels with no immunity grant, will take up the second week of the hearings.
The joint House-Senate hearings begin Tuesday in the Senate Caucus Room.
