The government today said at least 10 Solidarity activists were detained across Poland for planning illegal May Day rallies against government policies.

One government spokesman said “several dozen” were rounded up but another contacted later would only confirm that there were “more than 10.”

The spokesmen also indicated that the detainees would be fined, marking the first time activists were punished for merely planning independent demonstrations.

The roundup was the second in a week as word spread of planned independent rallies in at least six Polish cities Friday to coincide with Communist Party rallies on the most important holiday in the communist world.

Last week 90 activists were detained and more than 500 warned against illegal activities.
