The House on Thursday passed and sent to President Reagan a stopgap bill to make sure retirees continue to receive life and health insurance benefits when companies file for bankruptcy.

Prompted by LTV Corp.’s decision to terminate benefits to its retirees, Congress last year passed a temporary law to protect all retirees. Congress now is considering a permanent change in the law.

The temporary law expires on May 15. The stopgap bill would extend protection to Sept. 15.
