Orange County Roundup : Olympians to Run in Women’s Track at UCI

Kim Gallagher, a 1984 Olympic silver medalist, and Ruth Wysocki, a 1984 Olympian, will compete in the Toyota/ASICS women’s track and field invitational Saturday at UC Irvine.

Gallagher, a member of the Los Angeles Track Club, and Wysocki, of the Brooks Track Club, are expected to lead the 1,500-meter race, which begins at 12:45 p.m.

Jill Harrington and Buffy Rabbitt, UC Irvine’s middle-distance leaders, will compete in the 800- and 1,500-meter races.

Harrington, a senior, has run UCI’s fastest 800 this season in 2 minutes 10 seconds and the fastest 1,500 (4:18). Rabbitt, a freshman and a graduate of Newport Harbor High School, has run 2:10.8 in the 800 and 4:24.0 in the 1,500.

UCI’s Jennifer Abraham and Gladees Prieur, the 1986 NCAA Division II cross-country champion from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, will run in the 3,000-meter race.

CeCe Chandler, the 1986 NCAA Division II champion from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, heads the field in the 100-meter hurdles, and Pam Marshall of the Mazda Track Club will attempt to break her personal best (49.99) in the 400.

The high jump will feature Katrina Johnson of the University of Arizona, the 1986 NCAA Division I outdoor champion at 6-4 1/2.

Field events begin at 10 a.m. Running events, beginning with the 5,000-meter race, start at 11:45.

Two Orange County residents have been named coaches for Western teams at the U.S. Olympic Festival, to be held July 13-26 in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and Greensboro, N.C. Shirley Topley of Tustin was named softball coach for the women’s West team, and Tom Green of Anaheim was appointed archery coach for the West.
