Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia lost a set Friday but defeated Thierry Tulasne of France, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the $375,000 German Open at Hamburg, West Germany.

“It naturally is not a shame to lose to Lendl,” Tulasne said after the 2-hour, 43-minute match. “I had a real chance of winning, but I missed it.”

Today, Lendl will meet Kent Carlsson of Sweden, who beat Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 6-2, 6-1. Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia will play Eduardo Bengoechea of Argentina in the other semifinal.

Mecir, who beat Lendl last month in Key Biscayne, Fla., defeated Martin Jaite of Argentina, 6-1, 6-3, and Bengoechea upset Mikael Pernfors of Sweden, 6-4, 6-1.

Bengoechea, ranked 86th in the world, scored the upset of the round for the second day in a row by adding the fourth-seeded Pernfors to his third-round defeat of sixth-seeded Joakim Nystrom, also of Sweden.

“My drop shots were even better today than yesterday,” the 27-year-old Argentine said. “I like to play that shot especially against the Swedes because they play always from the base line and it makes it difficult for them.”

Mecir won the German championships in 1985 and last year was defeated in the final by Henri Leconte of France.

Beverly Bowes, a University of Texas senior, upset No. 3-seeded Terry Phelps, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, and will meet No. 1-seeded Chris Evert in the semifinals of a $150,000 women’s tournament at Largo, Fla.

Evert advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Laura Gildemeister of Peru.

In another quarterfinal match, No. 2 Kathy Rinaldi defeated Gisele Miro of Brazil, 7-5, 6-4, and will play No. 4 Kate Gompert, who won her quarterfinal match Thursday.
