Sen. William Proxmire (D-Wis.) called for an investigation into charges of news censorship by the military in the European and Pacific editions of Stars & Stripes, a daily newspaper provided to members of the armed services. “We simply cannot in good conscience send troops abroad to lead the struggle for freedom and censor Stars & Stripes at the same time,” Proxmire said. Proxmire reported that staff members for the Pacific edition said unfavorable news was being taken out of the paper.
