Angolan rebels said Saturday that they killed 108 government troops and four Cubans in a battle in the northern diamond-producing province of Lunda.

A statement distributed in Lisbon by UNITA, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola, said the clash took place April 23 near Mulvulege when its guerrillas surprised troops preparing to move against rebel positions.

UNITA, which said it lost 11 guerrillas killed, has fought Angola’s Cuban-backed Marxist government since the former Portuguese colony gained independence in 1975.
