Marathoners Compete Today in Long Beach

A record field is expected to brave a chilly start at today’s Long Beach Marathon, which will start in front of the Long Beach Convention Center at 7:30 a.m.

Race organizers say the popularity of the Los Angeles Marathon has enhanced their race, which may have as many as 3,700 runners. Race director Joe Carlson said that the sixth annual Long Beach race has nearly doubled its entries.

“The marketing of that race has increased the awareness of ours,” Carlson said.

Race organizers moved the Long Beach Marathon from the first week in February to better capitalize on marathon awareness in the region. The Los Angeles Marathon was March 1.
