Alps of America

Share

Once again Jerry Hulse warmed the hearts of those of us in remote Turners Falls who have seen the grandeur of the San Juans (mountains), with his superb March 29 article on the guest ranch he visited south of Ouray (Colo.). My fear of heights did not permit me to go any farther than Silverton, but we did see some of the abandoned mines about which he wrote.

As I read Jerry’s descriptive passages on the magnificent peaks of the San Juans and his ride with Scott MacTiernan high above the timberline, I felt the same pangs in my stomach as I did on our trip aboard the Durango-Silverton Narrow-Gauge Railroad. Such beauty is unsurpassed, and as Jerry stated, “No mountains anywhere in the United States compare with those of Ouray.”

I have sent a copy of the article to our daughter in Durango, who is a student at Fort Lewis College.

It was a delight to share in Jerry’s trip to the “Alps of America.”
