Omar Sharif attended the Polish premiere of “Doctor Zhivago” last week as part of an Omar Sharif festival given by a student organization in Warsaw. The screen version of the epic novel by Soviet author Boris Pasternak has been banned, like the book, in Warsaw Pact countries. “I’m happy the movie was shown here,” Sharif said. “And I’d be very happy if the film was shown in the Soviet Union.” Pasternak has only recently been “culturally rehabilitated” by the Soviet government.
