The Nation : Rally Salutes Soviet Jews

Nearly 200,000 people turned out for a New York rally for Soviet Jews on the 16th annual Solidarity Sunday. They heard smuggled messages from dissenters and waved flags that demanded, “Let Our People Go.” Speakers, who included freed dissident Natan Sharansky, expressed guarded optimism about a Soviet loosening of emigration rules and called for the release of all Jews who wish to leave the country. “Only when the last Jew will join us in freedom can we relax our struggle,” he said.
