French entertainer Dalida committed suicide last weekend in Paris. Egyptian-born Dalida, who rose to fame in the 1950s and sold about 85 million records, was found dead by a friend. Emergency-service officials said that she had swallowed an overdose of sleeping pills and left a note saying, “Life is unbearable for me, forgive me.” Friends, neighbors and fans who gathered at the house in the picturesque Montmartre quarter, where the 54-year-old singer was a well-loved figure, said they were shocked at news of her death. Dalida was due to give concerts in Belgium and France this week.
