Garden Grove : City Is First to Join Fingerprint Network
The Garden Grove Police Department on Monday became the first municipal law enforcement agency in the state to hook up to a statewide fingerprint-matching computer network.
Lt. Chuck Gibbs said the $250,000 “full-use access terminal” will allow investigators to check for possible suspects in seconds. The terminal is hooked up to a computer at the Sheriff’s Department, and the hookup will be transferred to a computer in Sacramento in July, he said.
Gibbs said the Police Department is only the third law enforcement agency in Californiato use the system. More police departments in the county, including Santa Ana, Irvine and Fullerton, are expected to institute the new technology soon.
He said the terminal has 4.5 million fingerprints in its system and has the capability of searching through 650 fingerprints in one second.
Gibbs said 70% of the terminal’s cost was paid through a state grant. He said a total of $2.9 million is available to county law enforcement agencies to acquire access to the system.
