It’s Legal to Floor It Again on Autobahns

WIESBADEN, West Germany — There is no longer any limit to life in the fast lane in West Germany.
A two-year-old experiment of speed limits on some of the country’s autobahn highways was ended Tuesday by the new center-right government in the state of Hesse.
The experiment, on three highways in the Frankfurt area, had been started by the previous coalition government of Social Democrats and environmentalist Greens.
West Germany is alone in Europe in not setting a general maximum speed limit on its highways, and it is not unusual to see cars flashing along the autobahn at speeds over 100 m.p.h.
