Avalon : Strobel Named as Mayor
Irene Strobel, a member of the City Council since 1982, has been elected the city’s first woman mayor by her colleagues on the council. She will serve a one-year term.
Strobel, 47, a longtime businesswoman in the city, is the last mayor to be elected from the five-member council. Beginning next year, voters will elect a mayor for a two-year term.
The mayor runs council meetings but has no veto power. The mayor also receives the same $200-a-month salary as the other council members.
Councilman George Scott was reelected mayor pro tem.
