The first Glenn Gould Prize, which carries a cash award of $50,000 (Canadian), will go to composer R. Murray Schafer, a spokeswoman for the Glenn Gould Memorial Foundation said in Toronto on Wednesday. Schafer, 54, who was born in Sarnia, Ontario, is a composer, music educator, environmentalist and scholar. The prize will be awarded every three years by an international jury in recognition of exceptional contribution to music and communications--regardless of nationality, a foundation spokeswoman said, adding that the fact that a Canadian won this year’s prize was a coincidence. Schafer said he would use the money “to move back to the country. I want to be quiet.”
