The lawyer defending former Labor Secretary Raymond J. Donovan against fraud charges accused prosecutors of waging a political vendetta against his client because he had the “audacity” to serve in the Reagan Administration. In an emotional final plea to the jury, defense lawyer William Bittmann charged that the chief prosecutor, assistant Bronx Dist. Atty. Stephen Bookin, “manipulated” and “distorted” evidence to build his case against Donovan and seven business associates.
