Chandler Wins Writing Award
Russell Chandler, a Times religion writer, has won the top writing award of the Religion Newswriters Assn. for articles published in 1986.
It was the third time Chandler has won the James O. Supple Memorial Award, worth $500. He was presented the Supple award also in 1977 and 1985 for his religion news coverage of the previous year.
Chandler also finished second in competition for the $2,500 John Templeton Award, which places emphasis on reporting. The winner was George Cornell, 66, the Associated Press religion writer since 1951.
Awards were presented at the recent annual meeting in Columbus, Ohio, of the Religion Newswriters Assn.
