Sculpture Support

Share

I would like to express my sentiment about the recent sculpture competition for Spanish Landing and Harbor Island. I have learned that there is some controversy concerning the sculpture chosen for the Harbor Island site. I would like my support of the committee’s decision to go on record.

As I understand it, in a democratic process, if a committee of experts makes a decision on some matter under its review, that decision should be accepted. The decision must not be negated or ridiculed, even if there is some disagreement. What was decided still should hold.

I speak from some experience, as my proposal for an outdoor sculpture at the Omni Hotel site was rejected by this same committee last fall. I must respect the committee’s decision or we have no democratic form of decision-making and no comprehensive vision for art in this city. Luckily, we have a good committee in the City Arts Advisory Committee.
