An Henri Matisse oil was stolen Monday from Stockholm’s Museum of Modern Art, the museum announced. The burglars broke through the museum’s front entrance in the early morning and removed Matisse’s “Le Jardin” (The Garden) from the wall, a museum spokeswoman said. They escaped before private guards arrived 10 minutes after an alarm was sounded. The spokeswoman described the 1920 oil painting as “well-known, invaluable and impossible to sell on the open market.” It was not insured, she said. Stockholm’s leading auction firm, Bukowskis, declined to estimate the value of the painting, saying only that it was probably worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
