DELAYS PUT SCR PROJECT BEHIND

Last-minute construction hitches have forced South Coast Repertory to delay the official opening of its 11,000-square-foot addition until June 22, officials for the Costa Mesa theater said Monday.

David Emmes, SCR’s producing artistic director, said several small problems, including moving a stretch of sidewalk outside the theater to avoid having to fell two trees, have prompted the delay.

Emmes said SCR staffers will move into the $1.7-million structure by June 1. The addition, a semi-circular structure bordering Town Center Drive, will house a much-needed rehearsal space, offices for visiting playwrights and an expanded costume shop.

“I think that we’ll have our boxes moved in by June 1, and we’ll have books on the shelves and pictures on the walls by June 22,” he said.

Emmes said the June 22 dedication ceremony, originally scheduled for Wednesday, will be attended by donors and SCR officials.
