Former Lyon Gestapo chief Klaus Barbie said today that hearing details of the tortures, deportations and murders with which he is charged made him feel that his trial is a revival of the Nuremberg war crimes tribunal.

“I had the impression after all those charges that I ran around Lyon with a rifle in my hand and chased Jews,” the 73-year-old Barbie said. Barbie, who was twice convicted of Nazi war crimes and escaped justice for 40 years, is accused of committing crimes against humanity while serving as head of the Gestapo in Lyon from 1942-44.
