U.S. Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III, warning narcotics fugitives they “can run but they can’t hide,” today announced the arrests of more than 200 alleged drug traffickers in a nationwide sweep that began two months ago.

The nine-week manhunt was conducted by special teams operating out of Los Angeles, San Diego, Houston, Chicago, Miami, Baltimore, New York and San Francisco, said Stanley Morris, director of the U.S. Marshals Service. Some had been at large as long as 11 years, Morris said, adding that the fugitives were typically “well-funded” and continued to ply their trade.
