POP MUSIC REVIEW : LEGGY STACEY Q AT THE PALACE

Share

Stacey Q is in a current line of lissome blondes on the charts (read: Regina, Samantha Fox, Kim Wilde) who, in Madonna’s wake, are proving that it’s possible for a girl to travel far on the strength of pinup-worthy sex appeal, attitude, and a hot-enough band and/or material.

As Stacey Swain, the singer has been a local staple for several years, fronting the band SSQ. Wednesday at the Palace, with the current version of that outfit (keyboardists Skip Hahn and Rich West and drummer Karl Moet), she kept her male fans grinning as she danced to the insistent get-the-job-done rhythms that have made her a national figure (pun intended).

On a bill that was sponsored by KPWR-FM (Power 106), the station that has done its bit to put Stacey on the map, the black cat-suit clad singer performed that kind of frothy, one-dimensional disco that earned the genre such a bad name in the first place. But she did display an easy camaraderie with her audience: “So what do ya think of college radio?” she asked teasingly. “Oh, never mind. . . . “

By the time she delivered her recent big hit, “Two of Hearts”--which has been parodied (and improved) by KIIS-FM personality Rick Dees in the brutally snide take-off called “Gary Hart”--the leggy singer had shaken her hips, flung her hair and snapped off enough Frug steps to satisfy all the fellows clinging to the edge of the stage throughout her performance. Madonna would’ve been proud.
