Secretary of State George Shultz hosted the first trilateral talks with the foreign ministers of Canada and Mexico in a session that scholars said could boost trade among the North American neighbors. At his home on the Stanford University campus, Shultz met informally with Canadian Foreign Minister Joe Clark and Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary Bernardo Sepulveda. The diplomats did not discuss details of their talks, but Stanford scholars who helped arrange the meeting said it marked a crucial step toward freer North American trade.
