30 Californians Among 100 Top Builders in U. S.

Thirty California-based builders are included in Builder magazine’s fourth annual listing of the nation’s 100 largest home building firms.

The survey, which appears in the magazine’s May issue, ranks builders according to their number of 1986 housing starts. It found that Dallas-based Trammell Crow Co. was the nation’s biggest home builder last year, with 14,545 starts and revenue of $1.1 billion. Columbus, Ohio-based Cardinal Industries was second, with 10,090 units and $611 million in revenue.

Los Angeles-based Kaufman & Broad Home Corp. started 5,006 homes last year, making it California’s largest builder and 14th biggest in the nation. Other California builders making the magazine’s list, in descending order, were A. G. Spanos Construction, CoastFed Properties, Robertson Homes, William Lyon Co., Vandenberghe Properties, Lewis Homes, Pacific Scene and Gibraltar Community Builders.

Also, Pacific Lighting Real Estate Group, Grupe Co., Lusk Co., Watt Industries, Mission Viejo Co., Morris General Building Co., Standard Pacific, Ira L. Brummell Development Co. and Elliott Homes.

California-based builders making the final one-third of the list were Dunmore Development, Barratt America, Griffin Homes, Baldwin Co., Regis Homes Corp., Leisure Technology, Midland Housing Industries, Warmington Homes, Barnett-Range Corp., Fieldstone Co., Newhall Land & Farming Co. and J.M. Peters Co.
