“VideoMate.” VideoMate Inc. (Two tapes, $29.95 each.) Great idea: videos as matchmakers! One 60-minute tape features “60 of Southern California’s finest single men” talking for about 45 seconds each. The other has 60 women doing the same. A brief resume listing age, religion, etc. follows each person’s speedy spiel. Viewers contact these lonelyhearts by sending in an enclosed card and a $15 membership fee (plus $6 per potential amour). If nothing else, VideoMate is a fascinating sociological experience: You really learn a lot about a person in less than a minute this way--including the obvious fact that many of these singles are not the “finest.” The tapes are simple yet classy--these people are looking for mates, not just dates, and there are no swimsuits or other tacky tactics. On the other hand, there’s not much range: L.A.-area people only, most listing their religion as Jewish; only two black women, no black men. Information: (213) 456-1696. ** 1/2
