Detroit’s grimy back alleys were on the screen, but the hometown audience was glittering as “Beverly Hills Cop II,” Paramount Pictures’ sequel to the 1985 Eddie Murphy hit, opened Tuesday night in the Motor City. The marching band from Mumford High School, immortalized on a T-shirt sported by Murphy in the original film, played while a crowd of 2,000 headed into Ford Auditorium for the screening. There were mixed reactions to the scenes shot in Detroit, which provided a rough-edged contrast to the opulence of Beverly Hills. “I guess that’s how they make the movies,” Deputy Police Chief James Bannon said. “They probably couldn’t find an alley in Beverly Hills, so they had to come all the way to Detroit.” Murphy was attending the Hollywood premiere of the movie at Mann’s Chinese Theater.
