UCLA Track Team Rated the Co-Favorite in Pac-10 Meet

The UCLA men’s and women’s track teams will compete Friday and Saturday in the Pacific-10 Conference championships at Oregon State in Corvallis.

The Bruin men, strong in the dashes and relays, are co-favorites with defending champion Oregon, once again strong in distance running. UCLA’s women will be paced by Gail Devers, strong in nearly everything.

UCLA’s men have the best marks this season in seven events, Oregon in four.

Bruin leaders are Henry Thomas in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, Danny Everett in the 400, Kevin Young in the 400 intermediate hurdles, shot-putter Jim Banich, the 400 relay team of Mike Marsh, Raymond Young, Eric Bixler and Thomas and the 1,600 relay team of Anthony Washington, Kevin Young, Thomas and Everett.

Oregon’s top marks have been turned in by Dave Anderson in the 800, Mark Dunbar in the 1,500, Dan Nelson in the 5,000 and J. J. Birden in the long jump.

Devers, who won the 200 in 22.85 at last week’s UCLA/Pepsi Invitational, has qualified for seven events, including dashes, the long jump, hurdles and relays.
