CSU Chancellor W. Ann Reynolds and Cleary spoke to the graduates. “These graduates are not the everyday breed of yuppies addicted to ‘me-ism,’ ” Cleary said. “They’re human beings who understand the need for love in an educated soul.”

The university also presented distinguished teaching awards to five professors: Charles Fierro, music; Jagdish Prabhaker, electrical and computer engineering; Barbara Rhodes, pan-African studies; Lesley Johnstone, English, and Michael Wittig, psychology. Two graduate students, Rebecca A. Litke and Robert A. Griffis, and one undergraduate, Roberta Mirisch, were recognized for outstanding academic achievement.
