Dean Named at UCI: Lewis Dennis Smith, chairman of Purdue University’s biological sciences department, has been named the new dean of the UC Irvine School of Biological Sciences, campus officials said. Expected to assume his new post in spring, 1988, Smith will head the largest school on the UCI campus, with 3,000 students. Smith received his doctorate in experimental embryology from Indiana University in 1963. He served as an associate professor of biology at Purdue from 1969 to 1980 before heading the department.
