Share

A series of entertainment and educational programs, including a Gilbert and Sullivan musical on the decks of the brig Pilgrim, will be offered this summer by the Orange County Marine Institute in Dana Point Harbor.

Harry Helling, the institute’s director of education, said “Pirates of Penzance” will be performed twice each Friday and Saturday, July 10 to Aug. 15.

The shows will take place aboard the Pilgrim, which is anchored in the harbor’s western end, a few yards from the institute’s buildings and docks.

Auditions for singers and dancers will be held May 30 at Fullerton College recital hall, Lemon and Chapman Avenues in Fullerton, Helling said. The lead role of the pirate king has already been filled, he said. For more information on auditions, call (714) 255-0507.

The institute will also conduct sea camps for children, taking them to sea on the research vessel Sum Fun to gather specimens of ocean life that they can study later in the institute’s laboratories.

In addition, organizers plan programs involving parents and children, cruises at sundown and other activities. Prices and information are available by calling (714) 496-2274.
