A federal judge today approved a $15-million emergency fund to help women injured by the Dalkon Shield intrauterine contraceptive with either surgery or in-vitro fertilization.

The program will be used to pay up to $15,000 in medical bills for women who qualify, said lawyers associated with the A. H. Robins case. The program will be funded by Robins. More than 300,000 women have filed claims against the Richmond pharmaceutical company, alleging injuries ranging from sterility to spontaneous abortion because of the crab-shaped IUD sold in the early 1970s.
