AND NOW HERE’S THE NEWS: It’s the ‘80s, the Deja Vu Decade, so it’s no surprise that pop stars are rummaging through their attics, looking for old hits to cover. However, some remakes do sound more promising than others. For example, how about Marianne Faithfull doing a new version of her languid 1964 hit, “As Tears Go By” (which was in itself a remake of a Rolling Stones tune). It’s the single from the new Faithfull album, “Strange Weather,” due June 22 from Island Records. Produced by Hal Willner (who put together recent tribute albums to Kurt Weil and Thelonious Monk), the record also features Faithfull covers of Billy Holiday’s “Yesterdays,” Dinah Washington’s “A Stranger on Earth” as well as the title cut, co-written by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan. The video for the new, improved “As Tears Go By,” directed by fashion photographer Terrence Donovan, will include ‘60s footage of Faithfull performances and other events of the time.
