South Korea will permit domestic sales of certain imported cars as part of a trade liberalization program that would ease import restrictions on 170 items beginning July 1, the Ministry of Trade and Industry said. South Korea has severely limited sales of foreign cars since the early 1960s. Other items to be included in the program are engine parts, canned meats, electronic goods, some steel products and textiles. All will be subject to tariffs. The United States had asked South Korea to ease restrictions on 46 of the 170 items in an effort to lessen trade frictions between the two nations.
