Red Callender--the veteran bassist, tuba player and composer--was elected Musician of the Year by the Los Angeles Jazz Society at its annual luncheon Sunday. Callender, author of the recently published autobiography “Unfinished Dream,” played with Louis Armstrong, Nat (King) Cole and Lester Young before a highly successful career as one of Hollywood’s busiest free-lance musicians. His best-known composition is the 1959 song hit “Primrose Lane.” The award will be presented at the society’s annual award concert Sept. 13 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Previous winners include Harry (Sweets) Edison, John Collins Jimmy Rowles, and the late Shelly Manne.
