A Holocaust monument in Skokie, Ill., was defaced with swastikas and the word “liar” one day after its dedication to 6 million Jews and other victims of the Nazis during World War II. Swastikas also were painted at an office owned by the president of the Holocaust Survivors of Metropolitan Chicago, which organized efforts to erect the statue, Skokie Mayor Albert Smith said. The 12-foot statue shows a freedom fighter guarding a mother, her slain infant, a rabbi and a child clinging to the rabbi’s knees.
