Cerritos : Park Named ‘The Field’

Share

The newest park in Cerritos will simply be called The Field. City Council members recently approved the name at the urging of residents living near the site south of Gahr High School on the city’s West Side. The 4 1/2-acre park will include a basketball court, a children’s play area with a slide and swing set, picnic tables and barbecues.

Land for the park, which is west of Eric Avenue at Rose Street and north of the Southern Pacific Railroad right of way, is surplus Artesia Cemetery District property. The park property is leased from the cemetery district for 20 years at $1 a year.

Construction on the park began last month and should be completed by October, city spokesman Michele Ogle said. The city will spend nearly $566,000 to develop the facility.

Ogle said residents near the park settled on the name, The Field, because children in the neighborhood have called the vacant parcel that for years. Other possible names were Rose and Rosewood parks. The Field is the 24th park or recreation facility to be built in Cerritos.
