After six months of meetings between city officials and Sandie Mercer Stables Inc. to discuss development of the 16-acre Lakewood Equestrian Center, the City Council has unanimously approved a 25-year lease.

Under the agreement, the Long Beach-based stables will contribute $721,000 over the next four years to construct new facilities at the center on Carson Street near the San Gabriel River. The city also has agreed to spend about $327,000 on basic improvements such as grading, landscaping and utilities.

The stables will provide boarding facilities for 330 horses and will offer public activities such as riding lessons, pony rides, group trail rides and a small animal farm.
