A group of armed men stole jewelry valued at $100,000 Wednesday from an Oceanside store, police reported.

At 4:20 p.m., five or six men, only one showing a weapon, entered the Gold and Gems store, 2525 Vista Way, Officer Robert George said.

Two clerks were forced to the floor while one of the robbers broke the jewelry cases with a hammer, George said, adding that no one was injured in the robbery.

The bandits fled in a stolen vehicle, then switched to another car parked about two blocks away.

Robberies using the same “gun and hammer” approach occurred in San Diego County about the same time last year, George said. It is believed that this is the first case in the county this year.

He said the robbers are suspected of being part of a Los Angeles-based gang that has also operated in Arizona and Nevada.
