VIDEORGY: How sexy is George Michael’s new single, “I Want Your Sex,” which is taken from the “Beverly Hills Cop II” sound track? Let’s just say it’s so sexy that Columbia Records has released three different CD versions of the single--some more expurgated than others--so radio programmers can decide for themselves which rendition to add to their playlists. Following listener complaints, several stations, including KTMT in Medford, Ore., and KCPX in Salt Lake City, have already dropped the song from their playlists. The Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) has also gotten into the fray. According to PMRC Executive Director Jennifer Norwood: “We’re getting several distressed calls a day on the song. MCA (the label releasing the song on its sound track) should have placed a parental advisory warning on the record.”

Now, after MTV rejected the original cut, you can expect a new trimmed-down version of the Michael video as well. The original version of the video--which looks like a live-action Penthouse photo feature--features such racy images as a nude couple embracing, a half-naked androgynous girl, writhing bodies under satin sheets and lots of Madonna-style lingerie. (Talk about sending out mixed signals--after all this under-the-covers action, the clip ends with the safe-sex message: “Explore Monogamy”).

Michael’s publicity firm, the Howard Bloom Organization, has been eagerly phoning media contacts around the country, saying MTV has “banned” the clip. However, MTV execs insist they’ve merely told Columbia it would have to make “multiple cuts” before the 24-hour video channel would air it, saying they wish to present the clip in a “responsible” manner. According to MTV sources, Columbia may make more cuts or perhaps have Michael tape an introductory message on the clip which would stress the video’s safe-sex message.
