Hodel and the Ozone Layer

Yet again, the ineptness of those surrounding President Reagan has shown through. At a Domestic Policy Council meeting Reagan’s secretary of the Interior suggested that one response to the breakdown of the ozone layer by chlorofluorocarbon chemicals would be for people to wear sunglasses, hats and protective sun lotions more often.

This is akin to saying that the urban crime situation is aggravated by a dearth of bulletproof vests.

This unimaginative non-solution should surprise no one, given the fact that it has long been known that Hodel despises any attempts by the government to intervene in problems created by industry. Ironically, and sadly, this is exactly what he and his department are sanctioned to do--intercede in private business practices when those practices threaten the environment.

The Reagan Administration’s irresponsibility toward the environment, typified by Hodel’s statement, threatens not only the relevancy of the Department of the Interior, but the future of Americans as well.
