As a group of parents pleaded Tuesday for restoration of $2 million for a special reading program in the San Diego Unified School District, Supt. Tom Payzant said that “it makes no sense” to discuss putting back programs cut earlier this year for budget reasons until state politicians complete an education funding package this summer.

Payzant told school board members that, should the state provide more money than proposed by Gov. George Deukmejian, they would then have to consider whether to reinstate all or part of the $11 million in education programs already cut, and weigh whether to give salary increases for employees, enhance existing programs now under-funded, or set aside money for new programs that will soon be needed.

Board President Kay Davis asked members to draw up a tentative list of five priority programs they would like to see funded should extra state money become available by mid-summer.
