A 27-year-old Sunland man who allegedly ran down a Los Angeles police detective with his car last week and then fled was charged Tuesday with assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.

Kerry Williams will be arraigned in Van Nuys Municipal Court before Friday, according to Deputy Dist. Atty. Linda B. Greenberg. Williams was arrested Tuesday in connection with the June 3 assault after an informant telephoned police, the prosecutor said.

Homicide Detective Duane Burris, 44, suffered torn leg ligaments after he was run down while chasing a man suspected of burglarizing a vehicle in the parking lot next to the City Hall in Van Nuys, Greenberg said.

Burris underwent surgery Saturday and may be released from the hospital today in a full leg cast, according to Detective Patrick Conmay.

Greenberg said the incident occurred only minutes after Williams left Van Nuys Municipal Court, where he was awaiting a preliminary hearing in another case in which he is charged with four counts of auto burglary. The hearing was continued, she said.

Williams is being held in lieu of $18,000 bail.

The charge, which alleges great bodily injury, carries a maximum penalty of 10 years and four months in prison, Greenberg said.
