Auditions for enrollment in the dance program at the new Orange County High School of the Performing Arts program will be held Sunday at UC Irvine, program director Ralph Opacic announced this week.

The arts high school program, the first of its kind in Orange County, will open as scheduled in September on the Los Alamitos High School campus, Opacic said.

The tuition-free arts school is being established by the Los Alamitos Unified School District, but it is open to students from throughout Orange County and bordering areas of Los Angeles County.

Auditions for classical and modern dancers will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the dance studio at UCI’s School of Fine Arts complex. For more information, call the Performing Arts High School office, (213) 430-1021 Ext. 413.

The auditions for drama, music and other arts will be held June 27 and 28; locations for the tryouts have yet to be chosen, Opacic said.

About 100 Los Alamitos district students are expected to compete. Based upon inquiries, Opacic said, about 400 students from other districts in Orange and Los Angeles counties are expected to audition.

If necessary, Opacic said, a second round of auditions will be conducted in late July.

Supporters of the new school are trying to raise $300,000 from corporate and other private donors to operate a “full-scale” program in 1987-88 for a projected 220 students. The program has already received a $194,700 operating grant from the state.
