The Vietnam Veterans of America and five members of Congress filed suit Friday to prevent the Reagan Administration from closing eight outreach centers for Vietnam War veterans.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court, charges that the Veterans Administration’s plan to close eight centers and move their operations to regular VA hospitals violates the intent of Congress.

The VA already has closed an outreach center in Wilmington, Del., and plans closings in Rochester, N.Y.; Fayetteville, N.C.; Oak Park. Ill.; Avon, Mass.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Northridge, Calif., Houston and Milwaukee.

The lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order against further closings until Oct. 1 or when Congress acts. There are 188 outreach centers under the program, set up in 1979 to give special counseling.
