The Transportation Department is reopening an investigation into sudden engine acceleration involving 3.2 million mid- and full-size Ford automobiles, a consumer group said Friday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration informed the Center for Auto Safety, a private group, that it had granted its request that the Ford case be reopened after new evidence indicated engine surging problems on some of the cars.

The models under investigation, all with fuel injected 3.8- and 5.0-liter engines and automatic transmissions, are the Ford Crown Victoria, LTD, Mustang and Thunderbird; the Mercury Grand Marquis, Cougar, Capri and Colony Park; and the Lincoln Town Car, Continental and Mark series car.
