A heat wave brought more temperatures in the high 90s to the Great Plains today, but a cool front took the sting out of the searing air across the upper Midwest and Great Lakes region after a weekend of record highs around 100.

Muggy weather also covered much of the East Coast, with Pomona, N.J., near Atlantic City, hitting a record high for the date of 92. It was 94 in New York City by early afternoon, two degrees under the record for the date.
