“Wilson Pickett’s Greatest Hits.” Atlantic. It has some cuts that weren’t hits, and a couple of the gruff-voiced soul shouter’s hits are absent. But this collection does just what a CD should: It clocks in at a jam-packed 71-plus minutes of sweaty rockers and steamy ballads, and it represents a new, CD-only compilation. The material’s quality varies wildly, but it says something about the force of the Alabaman’s singing that he can make the Archies’ “Sugar Sugar” sound as good as “Hey Jude.” His sly rendition of Randy Newman’s “Mama Told Me Not to Come” is a real revelation. The data on the studios and musicians adds up to a fascinating road map through the heart of ‘60s soul music: Memphis to Muscle Shoals to Philadelphia, Steve Cropper to Duane Allman to Cissy Houston. *** 1/2
